Student Spotlight – Austin Marks

Austin Marks, current Graduate Assistant of Facilities with Recreational Sports at the University of Louisiana (Lafayette, LA), serves as the Student Leader for the State of Louisiana. In addition to his state leadership role, Austin also holds the position as Vice Chair of the Student Development Committee for Region IV.

Austin found his way to Region IV and the University of Louisiana via his undergraduate experience at the University of Akron. It “started by just getting a job (there). I slowly enjoyed the operation and how great it was. Then I began to acquire knowledge on how to go about it and decided this is what I wanted to do with my life.

Like so many of the #NIRSAFamily, Austin has benefited from the impact of others and wanted to provide that to others. The most impactful aspect of his experience is “being able to assist students in their own development, whether that is in campus recreation or any other field.” Austin takes advantage of each opportunity to share his knowledge and provide those opportunities for his students.

Though relatively newer to Region IV, Austin has already learned about the incredible members. “Being a part of Region IV, I have been lucky to meet so many great people that have created great memories.” It’s through these experiences that led Austin to share this advice with other students. Campus recreation “is like another family; wherever you go you are likely to connect with someone. Make sure you enjoy it!”

One thing that Austin enjoys is eating food that may make some of our fitness friends cringe. You may not be able to tell this about Austin simply by looking at him, but he can house a large pizza AND a pint of ice cream in one sitting.

Who’s up for a slice?

Welcome to Region IV, Austin!
